Arsenic combines with iron and is subsequently captured by the AS-FE-MN media, which has an affinity for metals. If there is no iron in the water, ferric chloride is added to the water to combine the arsenic with the iron. Ferric chloride may need to be added if the arsenic in the water is high. In a laboratory test, a small amount of ferric chloride was added to well water containing approximately 78 PPB of arsenic and then passed through AS-FE-MN media. According to the results obtained, the arsenic content of AS-FE-MN media was lower than 78 PPB. It has been proven to reduce to < 1 PPB. In large-scale applications, AS-FE-MN media is simply backwashed with clean chlorinated water and put back into service. It does not need regeneration like the classic Greensand media.
